These summaries are great and is a great start to our module assignment! I have a concern though about your proposed research topic. Wondering if you have any particular research setting in mind (I remember you told me you wanted to do your research in Glasgow). Which study area you are looking at? And how grounded theory could be a useful tool for your research. Happy to brainstorm as always!

Thanks for appreciation. Although i have the research topic already in mind, i have not yet explored Glasgow very well to come up with the study area. But it is something i would like to embark on soon.

Thanks for giving me such positive feedback. I intend to carry out my research in Glasgow city centre although i have not yet exactly identified the exact areas. I would like to use grounded theory because it is likely to have some quantitative aspects.

Victoria and Kristen this was such an interesting conversation. I have been having problems to engage with the course, but your conversation around language, settings and possibles research had made me feel more engaged. So thanks for that. Even more, because I will like to do my thesis around refugees women so I am having similar questions about the limitations I can have.


Right now I am doing small volunteering with asylum seekers and most of them don't speak English, Spanish or french. So the language barrier has definitely been a challenge. To communicate with them I have use cards with images and just small words, I also call them trough video calls so we feel less distance. So far, for that experience, I can suggest also, that maybe you can see different groups of refugees and try to find a group that maybe is in another stage of the process and now how to speak the language where you want to conduct your research.

Also, I will take a deeper look into the difference between translation and adaptation and will talk with a Standford teacher about that. So I can understand how not to lose the meaning of words during translation. Let me know if you are interested in that too.

I would say go for it, Paula! I think your attempt to bridge the contexts of language and adult education in the context of asylum seekers would be exciting. There are for sure organisations here in Glasgow or wherever research area you will choose to pursue! Cheering for you!

I say go as well! You can look at the impact of civil society presence in a community and how they support/catalyse and strengthen lifelong learning initiatives based on your data from both organisations and participants who have learned from their programmes.

Can I grab this copy? Just by scanning the abstract, there seems to be a lot of questions the researcher raised about the concerns of Vietnam's Higher Education system. I remember working with the Vietnamese government and several universities previously about the areas where they could improve education systems. But then, they could only do so much if no investments will be made further. But certainly, happy to brainstorm with you my observations.

I am a migrant worker too and I am happy to discuss this with you and perhaps link you with some realisations and reflections that I have developed in my reading of several theories we were engaged during this programme. Hi McRohn! I have sent you a reply but I see that it disappeared somewhere. Yes, great idea to discuss and share those experiences, I am looking forward to hearing about your research in that field! To me the subject is an interesting one considering various educational efforts which accompany the process of adjustment by the migrant worker, as much as the learning that the employer and other employees informally undergo in such setting. Of course, the power structures and policies determining the rights of migrant workers surely influence what knowledge is generated and what knowledge is accessed, which is where it gets interesting for me.
