(IMAESCII521) Forum Personal Post: Module 5 and 6 - Quantitative Research, Survey Designs and Questionnaires (Group Work)

(The KYAKA-II Settement Research Team, clockwise from left - Kenneth, Me, Kiko and Justyna. Great Teamwork!)

To be honest, this is the part I dreaded the most (haha!)

No offense meant, but I am not a quantitative person and I am definitely not a numbers person. So to engage myself in these modules gave me a bit of stress.

But in my engagement in these topics, I actually found out that with the right tools and statistical understanding, quantitative research can actually be very exciting. Empirical researches definitely fall under the positivist tradition. Yet evidence-based research can be powerful tools in many ways such as policymaking.

For these weeks (I will combine them here), I am glad our class were given the chance to work with groups. For this project, I worked with my lovely friends at the IMAESC programme - Justyna, Kenneth and Kiko to fulfill the following:

===================================

Doing quantitative research on the education needs and barriers for immigrants and refugees is a challenging task.

Based on the study materials and your own ideas and expertise try to provide conceptual and operational definitions of the concepts of immigrants and refugees' "education needs" and "barriers to access and participation in education" (formal and non-formal). On this basis, identify dimensions, i.e. aspects, of these concepts and indicators for each of the dimensions that can be used to measure them.

This is a group activity. You can form 5 groups of 4 students each. It is up to you to select your own group. During our 4th meeting (25th of Feb) each group will make a short presentation of your ideas about how to measure these concepts in relation to the target group of adult immigrants and refugees.

Dear Andreas, classmates

Our group made a slightly different approach to this assignment. We created a table listing down all the possible concepts and theories we can identify with the 2 broader concepts presented in the assignment.

Just as a caveat, we did not do an exhaustive listing of theories just yet; but rather focused on how we situate and define these concepts to the dimensions and measurement/analysis of our study; as well possible methodology of obtaining quantitative data (assuming we are doing a quantitative study).

We were supposed to add content on the possible survey questions on our survey instrument under 'Sample Questions' column. We assume that this may be useful for the following week's session on preparing survey instruments.

Thank you very much,
Justyna, Kenneth, Kiko and McRhon
